The antics of the likes of Extinction Rebellion and increasing pressure from environmental groups has hit the public consciousness as the figures show a large jump in the number of people being in favour of going carbon neutral. A rise of 25% from the 64% recorded in 2017.
Such an increase also highlights the influence the media has over the populace as every day there are climate related stories hitting the headlines.
Other findings of the survey showed that of the 2,000 people surveyed 82% believe that air pollution is damaging to health with just 8% convinced that it has no impact whatsoever.
Calls for greater investment in renewable energy generation increased to 40% and 33% were shown to want to see a reduction in the use of fossil fuels used to generate power.
“Public concern about the nature of climate change is unprecedented. The public is demanding action on climate change and those in government must pay attention. Britain is currently leading the way in reducing our own emissions but unless those in power increase their actions, we will fall behind,” said Steven Day, Co-Founder of Pure Planet.
Companies like Pure Planet have embraced renewable energy and have used it to their advantage when it comes to attracting consumers.
It’s also raised its profile for being a good employer by introducing environmentally friendly policies such as carbon offsetting its staff members commutes to and from work and offering benefits to encourage employees to adopt a greener lifestyle. This includes offering interest-free train season tickets and discounted bus tickets, as well as a bikes-for-work scheme.
As a result of these polices the company achieved second place (but the top energy supplier) in the Sunday Times top 100 companies list.
Such policies will entice consumers concerned about the environment as well as those who want to have their energy provided by a company that looks after their staff. A good reputation is hugely important to energy suppliers as those with the best tend to rise to the top.
With the governments push to hit net zero emissions by 2050 and the rapid pace of the change of public opinion it’s likely that all energy suppliers will have to demonstrate that they’re providing power from genuine renewable sources. Those that don’t could fall behind.
