Third of UK’s Largest Businesses commit to UN’s Race to Zero Campaign

Richard Simmonds • Mar 30, 2021

One in three of the UK’s largest companies have made a committed to achieving NetZero carbon emissions by signing up to the United Nations (UN) Race to Zero campaign.

What is Race to Zero?

The campaign launched by the UN urges businesses and organisation from across the globe to commit to achieving net zero carbon emissions by the year 2050 or sooner.

Over the last six months the number of companies hopping aboard the ‘green’ train has grown sharply with the likes of Vodafone, AstraZeneca, Rolls-Royce, Unilever, and Sainsbury’s all signing up. Whether these companies are truly committing to slashing their emissions or simply just joining the campaign to appear ‘virtuous’ remains to be seen.

Call for more businesses to join

“Businesses wield incredible influence to drive change across society and the economy- we need to harness this power to fight climate change.

‘UK businesses are already leading the way in cutting carbon emissions and building back greener- it is fantastic to see so many of our biggest companies already pledging to reach net zero.

‘But more can be done and so today I am calling on more fantastic British companies already pledging to reach net zero,” said Kwasi Kwarteng, Business and Energy Secretary just days after the government axed the Green Homes Grant.

The government’s appointed Net Zero Business Champion Andrew Griffith has reached out to every company in the FTSE 100 to entice them to join the campaign.

Worldwide, over 2000 companies of all shapes and sizes have signed up to the Race to Zero campaign, a third of which are British businesses from across all sectors.

COP26

All eyes are fixed on this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) with hopes high that breakthroughs will be achieved at the Glasgow hosted conference. Initially Cop26 was due to take place in November 2020 but as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic the event was postponed to this year.

The previous event ended in disappointment as after two weeks of talks little was agreed aside from more cuts to greenhouse gas emissions. Few attending nations committed to new targets and the conference ended with climate scientists warning that the world is on track for a potentially disastrous 3C rise in global temperatures.

Mr Griffith added: “Since firing the starting gun on the year-long road to Glasgow a few months ago, we have seen an accelerating rate of the UK’s largest and most successful businesses taking action on climate.

“Today’s news of 30 of the FTSE100 joining the Race to Zero makes the UK a global leader on tackling emissions with British companies representing a third of those signed up globally. It shows what can be done but, in the months, running up to, every board should engage on this vital topic.”
