Smart Meter Installations rebound strongly and held steady during Lockdown 2.0

Richard Simmonds • Dec 07, 2020

The latest smart meter installation data released by the Data Communications Company (DCC) reveals that the impact on the number of meters installed during the UK’s second Covid-19 lockdown was far less than in the first one.

What a difference a lockdown makes

Despite the restrictions continuing to be imposed on the vast majority of the country, the number of smart meters being installed by energy suppliers continues to rise.

During the second national lockdown the number of smart meter installations declined by just 2.5% whereas during the first and much longer national lockdown installations plummeted by a massive 96.2%.

The decline in installations during the first lockdown was so extreme that it forced the energy regulator Ofgem and the government to push back smart meter rollout targets.

In November, the number of smart meters installed per day was on average 17,148 per day and throughout the month 360,100 SMETS2 meters were installed.

In comparison the March to June lockdown saw average daily installations of just 658 a significant plunge from the 17,362-average seen in February. The lowest daily figure during the first lockdown was just 323.

Energy Suppliers have stepped up

Unsurprisingly the areas that saw the most installations were the areas that have the lowest cases of Covid-19.

Places like Devon and Cornwall saw the number of new smart meter installations remain relatively steady during November whereas higher risk areas such as Manchester saw a month-on-month decline.

‘The huge disparity in the installation rates demonstrates how successfully energy companies, distribution network operators and installation engineers have adapted their working practices since mid-summer, to enable installations to continue safely in homes,’ said the DCC.

Energy suppliers, like many other types of businesses have had to make significant changes to ensure that they could remain functioning during the pandemic, but they have risen to the challenge in most cases.

The fact that consumers are allowing smart meters to be installed during the lockdowns shows that the suppliers have won consumer confidence when it comes to performing safe installations.

“These figures show the smart meter roll-out has progressed apace despite the second lockdown. The sustained rebound from the lows of the spring lockdown is testament to the innovation and safe working practices of our customers, and it demonstrates that all involved have earned the confidence of the public.

“The DCC’s secure network is a platform for good, and the data flowing across it is paving the way for better use of renewable energy. With our partners in the energy industry, we’re making Britain more connected so we can all lead smarter, greener lives,” said Angus Flett, Chief executive of the DCC.
