The number of people switching
energy provider has grown dramatically over the last five years due to increased awareness and advice from watchdogs. In October alone, 626,284 people switched their supplier. In 2014, the number of people switching was recorded at 3million, but jumped to 5.8 million in 2018.
2019 looks set to break the 2018 record with the number of switches up by 9.2% compared to the same period last year. With just a month to go until the end of the year the number of those switching is on track to hit the 6 million mark.
“This month’s figures show that consumers continue to take advantage of the increased competition. Over 5.3 million customers have already moved to a new supplier and switching is on track to hit the 6 million mark this year. With the temperatures dropping across the country, I’d encourage consumers to get in touch with their supplier or have a look online to make sure they’re on the best deal ahead of winter and the cold weather. More importantly I’d urge everyone to make their homes more energy efficient – for example by insulating the roof or installing LED light bulbs - as this is the best way to save money on your bills and at the same time do your bit to save the planet,” said Audrey Gallacher, Energy UK’s director of policy.
Big Six Supplier Npower hit the headlines for announcing 4,500 job losses following figures that showed it lost 261,000customers in the third quarter of 2019 as smaller providers increased competition.
Npower also posted a nine-month operating loss of €167m (£142.1), with expected losses for the whole year expected to hit €250m.
