How to start an Electric Supply Company in the UK

Getting an Electricity Supply Licence

In order to enter the electricity market in the UK, all energy suppliers must attain an electricity supply licence which is issued by the energy regulator Ofgem.

Licence Lite

Unlike gas suppliers, new electricity companies have the option to go down a licence lite route which can reduce the time to market. This works by partnering with an existing supplier already in the industry to assist with some of the challenging parts of getting started. Ofgem, the BEIS and Elexon

As an electricity supplier, you will regularly have to deal with Ofgem, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and other regulatory bodies in order to satisfy them that you and your business have consumer interests at heart.

The most important interaction you will have with Ofgem is fulfilling their reporting requirements where you will have to provide data on various metrics.

Elexon administers the Balancing Settlement Code (BSC) for the UK electricity industry ensuring that all qualified parties operate within the codes framework. MRASCo
