The number of households stating that they are either very worried or fairly worried about energy bill payments has increased from 37% to 40% from March 2020 as fears over rising electricity and gas prices and financial concerns caused by the Covid-19 pandemic continue to weigh.
The survey asked participants how worried they were about food and household shopping costs, and transport costs such as petrol, diesel, and public transport costs. One in ten people surveyed said that they were more worried over energy bills than the other two costs.
When asked why energy bill costs were of greater concern the main answer (56%) was because energy bills are more expensive than other vital items and 53% said that cannot easily live without energy unlike other items.

The increase to Ofgem’s energy price cap has also played its part in increasing concerns over energy bill payments.
Last month was near record-breaking for the number of consumers switching their energy supplier.
Last March, almost a quarter of the public said they have switched their energy supplier in the last year, with a further 45% saying they have switched supplier more than a year ago.
Those more likely to have switched at any stage included those aged 65 and over (82%, compared with 46% of those aged 16 to 24) and homeowners (78%, compared with 57% of private renters and 59% of social renters).
The BEIS data also covered the matter of trust consumers have in their energy suppliers. Compared to March 2020 levels of trust stayed relatively the same however there was some insight into what issues consumers trust their suppliers and those that they don’t.
70% of those surveyed said that they trusted their supplier to provide them with a breakdown of the components of their energy bills. 72% said they trusted their supplier to provide them with accurate bills which accurately reflect the amount of energy they’ve used.
People were least likely to trust energy suppliers to improve their home to make it more energy-efficient if paid to do so (43%).
